The Snows Are Melted, the Snows Are Gone

In post-apocalyptic Ethiopia, an armless girl and an unnaturally intelligent lupine creature stalk a (primitive, apparently) man, lure him away from his tribe, and capture him, presumably to use as breeding stock:

"Our savior." His voice was harsh and high. "There's your damned Y chromosome. He's filthy."

Tiptree emphasizes repeatedly that there are no insects, and one assumes that some disaster--perhaps nuclear?--has caused this, as well as the shortage of Y chromosomes and the general disfigurement of the protagonists--the girl with no arms, the boy with no legs.

The world here seems slightly interesting, but the story didn't stir me much.
