The New Teen Titans
#4
(1981-02)
The issue opens with the Justice League fighting several peculiarly-dressed old men. The old men can take care of themselves. Next scene, Raven has returned to Azarath–which was forbidden to her–to plead for help defending the Earth. The people there, including her mother, are pacifists. And, apparently, fatalists: "There is a will to all. If Trigon destroys the Earth, that, too, is willed." Raven is uninterested in their excuses, but is unable to convince them. Her mother forcibly returns her to Earth. Raven comes to in the Titans' tower, where the other Titans are, inexplicably, present, healthy, and without any memory of the Fearsome Five. Raven deduces that the villains have erased the Titans' memories and sent them back home, but why? Raven explains the origin of Trigon to the Titans: he is the child of a demon, who came to control his entire dimension through a combination of power and cruelty. After the explanation, the Titans come to the conclusion that the Justice League must be destroyed to prevent Trigon from invading their own dimension–a result of Psymon's mind control. The Titans visit the JL and quickly attack them. Due to the JL's unwillingness to harm the Titans, they are unable to subdue them. Raven appears and uses an illusion of the JL dying to break the spell on them, similar to what she did for Grant Wilson back in issue #2. It turns out the weird old guys from the beginning were trying to keep Trigon from invading, and the JL managed to interfere, so now Trigon is sending his servant Goronn over to soften the Earth up before he arrives to take control. The Titans lambast the JL for this, but Zatanna reveals that Raven had previously approached them with tales of Trigon, but they didn't believe her because she sensed "an incredible evil" in Raven. She also reveals that Raven has used her powers to make Kid Flash love her. This pretty well tears the Titans apart, and at a very dangerous moment.
