Remembering this episode, Nimoy indicated that Vulcan was meant to be a matriarchy, and T'Pau "the head of the planet" (Gross & Altman, 1995, p. 53):

We arrived on the planet, the three key figures—Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy—were greeted by a procession coming out from the city. When the procession arrived, we discover that Vulcan is a matriarchy, the head of the planet being brought out, carried in a sedan chair by some bearers.
