Run types

Speedruns in Super Mario World fall under a few major categories.

96 exit runs

These runs require the player to get all 96 exits, completing the game. This takes about 90 minutes to accomplish: on speedrun.com, the top time as of [2022-03-18 Fri] is 1:21:17. The 100th best time is 1:33:29.

Lunar Dragon

In addition to getting all 96 exits, Lunar Dragon runs require the player to collect all moons and at least five dragon coins on each level for which it is possible. The times for these are surprisingly near those of a basic 96 exit run. As of [2022-03-18 Fri], 1:31:52 is the top time, and the 27th (bottom) time is 2:18:32.

11 exit runs

It is possible to complete the game with only 11 exits by going through Star World. The full route is:

1. Yoshi's Island 2
2. Yoshi's Island 3
3. Yoshi's Island 4
4. Iggy's Castle
5. Donut Plains 1 Secret Exit
6. Donut Secret 1 Secret Exit
7. Donut Secret House Secret Exit
8. Star World 1 Secret Exit
9. Star World 2 Secret Exit
10. Star World 3 Secret Exit
11. Star World 4 Secret Exit

Then enter the Front Door and beat Bowser.

11 exit runs are very quick. As of [2022-03-18 Fri], the top time is 9:43 and the 100th time is 10:40.

No Cape

Without a cape, only 95 exits are possible (Donut Ghost House's secret exit cannot be reached).

The times for No Cape runs are pretty similar to the normal varieties.

Small Only

These runs disallow powerups and Yoshi, so some exits are not possible.
