Marginal Existence

An entire alien society committed itself to the care of machines, to sleep forever in a drugged euphoria. But it went wrong: "too much pleasure became an intolerable torture" and for six centuries they suffered unspeakable agony. McCoy and others are captured by the machines that maintain this existence and placed into sleeping chambers where they, too, suffer. Kirk, Spock, Chekov, and Chapel rescue them and disable the machines.
