Action Comics #30 (1940-11)

Superman

A madman, Zolar, has caused the summer weather to be cold as winter--snow and all. A woman named Laura Vogel comes over the radio, claiming to know the cause, and demanding to meet with Superman. When he goes to meet her, he finds a group of Arabs with a strange weapon that can disintegrate people, leaving behind only shadows. It transpires that these men work for Zolar, who seeks to hoard radium, which he has used to effect this change in the weather, and which he can put to other purposes, as well. Rescuing Lois from the men, Superman returns to attempt to save Vogel, who they kidnapped, but is himself captured. He is taken to Zolar, but he is able to defeat him--when suddenly the woman, Vogel, reveals that she is not Vogel at all, but one of Zolar's minions, the two try to destroy Superman, but are themselves destroyed.

Vogel's true identity was not terribly surprising, but somehow this story was still more satisfying than usual, though the plot wasn't that good.

Supermen of America

The column urges members to stand up not only for themselves, but also for others: not to suffer bullies, or those who torment animals. It draws a parallel between a strong person bullying a weak one and a strong country 'bullying' a weak one.

Secret message: "STRENGTH HAS NO GREATNESS UNLESS IT IS USED TO AID THE WEAK."
