Boring. Unpleasant things happen to three children, beginning with their parents perishing in a fire and ending with the eldest nearly being forced to marry her old and evil cousin, who intends to steal her inheritance.

The writing style, on average, is pretty good--in small doses, anyway--but the story isn't interesting, and frankly the book just seems mean.
