Kirk is obliged to undertake a dangerous, secret mission from which he may not return. He orders Spock (who he has informed about the mission contrary to his orders of secrecy) to abandon him if he fails to return within eight hours--under no circumstances may a rescue be attempted. With the final hour upon them, Spock and McCoy wait--and prepare to leave, if necessary.
