State of the Art

In his first column in Starlog, Gerrold discusses what science fiction is and what a critic's role is:

Taste, it is said, is the result of a thousand distastes--it is the result of experience. The critic should be experienced, it should be his job not to tell the audience what he things, but what they should look for so they can think for themselves. The critic's job is to make good audiences into better ones by giving them the knowledge they need to better appreciate the escapes, the dreams, and the entertainment they are experiencing.
