Rightful Heir

Star Trek: The Next Generation 6x23

Worf is experiencing a crisis of faith, and it is interfering with his duties. Picard places him on leave and instructs him to sort himself out, by going to the monastery on Boreth.

There, Worf throws himself into prayer, hoping to see a vision of Kahless. After ten days, Worf is disheartened, and prepares to leave, but the high prieset, Koroth, encourges him to be patient. Worf makes another attempt–and sees a vision of Kahless. More than that, Kahless appears before him physically, declaring that he has returned.

The balance of the episode is spent pondering whether the Kahless who appeared before Worf is the real thing, and what this means for Klingon society. On the one hand, Kahless seems to know things he should not otherwise know–he says he remembers appearing before Worf in a vision when Worf was young, for example. On the other hand, he does not appear to have the fighting prowess one would expect of Kahless.

Spoiler

Even his DNA matches–because he is a clone of Kahless, knowledge implanted in him by the priests. He himself did not know he was a clone.

Gowron agrees to make the clone Emperor–but merely a figurehead, a spiritual leader of the people.
