When it Comes A'Knockin'

Swamp Thing #2 (2011-12)

As I said of the last issue, there is a Swamp Thing that is not Dr. Holland. It is, it turns out, his predecessor--who was Calbraith A. H. Rodgers. The Swamp Thing tells Dr. Holland that there is some being, Sethe, who is the enemy of life, progenitor of plagues. This Sethe, the Swamp Thing believes, is poised to wreak havoc on the world, and only Dr. Holland can stop this grim event. Dr. Holland has developed a formula that could cause the desert to flourish with plantlife, which the Swamp Thing believes marks him as the fabled warrior king, "the greatest protector the green has known". The Swamp Thing indicates that Sethe has probably "already sent envoys to find and kill [him]".

The Swamp Thing has sacrificed his life to deliver this message, in hopes of swaying Dr. Holland who is determined never again to be the monster that he was as the swamp thing. As a last request, the Swamp Thing asks Dr. Holland to stay away from the white haired woman from his dreams.

When Dr. Holland returns to his motel, he is attacked by the proprietor--who is dead, having been turned into some sort of zombie by some insect, as we saw happening in the previous issue. Dr. Holland is rescued by a person on a motorcycle, who later removes her helmet, revealing white hair. Aiming her gun at him, she introduces herself: "My name is Abigail Arcane. And I'm about to watch you die."
