Batman
#2
(2011-12)
The dead guy from the last issue is, apparently, a 'high-end trainer'. A week ago (just before he died), as it turns out, he tried to warn Dick, saying something like "They're real. They're everywhere. And they're sending him for you--all of you." The implication, I suppose, is that 'they' are the 'Court of Owls.' Commissioner Gordon and Batman recite a little nursery rhyme about the group, but Batman insists that they don't exist. An attempt is made on Bruce's life, but he escapes. His would-be assassin also escapes, recovering from a deathlike state and escaping the ambulance he was in. During the attempt, the assassin tells Bruce that "the Court of Owls has sentenced you to die." Despite this, Batman ends the issue with these words: "Which is why I can say that there is no Court of Owls. Not in Gotham. Not in my city."
