Detective Comics #42 (1940-08)

Batman

Wylie, an acquaintance of Bruce's, has discovered an artist and brought him over from Europe. Mysteriously, since coming over, his portraits have turned prophetic: they suffer damage that foretells how their subjects will die. Batman discovers that it is Wylie committing the murders. At the end, Wylie kills himself rather than be turned over to the police. Says Robin, "He couldn't stand the disgrace!"
